PEKOE TRAIL HIGHLANDS TREKKING EXPERIENCE – SRI LANKA

Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, where you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. The scenic drive passes through lush countryside, rivers, and small towns, offering a gentle introduction to the Central Highlands. Upon arrival, check in and relax after your journey. In the evening, you may enjoy a short walk around Kandy Lake or relax at the hotel preparing for the trekking adventure ahead.

After breakfast, proceed to the trailhead near the Hanthana Tea Museum to begin Pekoe Trail Stage 01 (Hanthana to Galaha). This gentle and scenic walk takes you through rolling tea fields, forest patches, and historic plantation paths with panoramic views over Kandy Valley. You will experience daily life of tea estate workers and enjoy peaceful mountain surroundings. After completing the walk, return to Kandy for relaxation.

Today you continue with Pekoe Trail Stage 02 (Galaha to Loolkandura), walking through deep tea estates, forest corridors, and ridgeline paths with cooler mountain air. Loolkandura is historically important as the birthplace of Sri Lankan tea cultivation. After the trek, proceed by vehicle toward Nuwara Eliya area and check in at your hotel for overnight stay.

Early morning departure to Horton Plains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for cloud forests, grasslands, and dramatic escarpments. Begin Pekoe Trail Stage 11 (Horton Plains to Udaweriya), descending gradually through misty forests and highland scenery with sweeping views of the southern plains. This is one of the most scenic and rewarding sections of the Pekoe Trail.

Today you hike Pekoe Trail Stage 12, a longer but rewarding walk through tea ridges, forest paths, and open viewpoints leading into the historic hill town of Haputale. This stage offers breathtaking views toward the southern coast on clear days and excellent opportunities to experience estate communities.

Begin Pekoe Trail Stage 13, walking through forest trails and tea-covered slopes toward St. Catherine, one of the most scenic ridge routes on the Pekoe Trail. This stretch is famous for dramatic cliff-edge views and cool mountain breezes. After completing the trek, transfer to Ella town for overnight stay.

Enjoy Pekoe Trail Stage 15, walking gently through tea paths, jungle fringes, and hillside villages leading into Ella. This is a relaxed and picturesque trail ideal for enjoying photography and peaceful nature. The afternoon is free to relax in Ella town.

Walk Pekoe Trail Stage 16, which connects Ella to Demodara, passing through forest trails and tea paths. Visit the iconic Nine Arch Bridge and Demodara Loop Viewpoint, two of Sri Lanka’s most photographed landmarks. Enjoy relaxed afternoon in Ella.

Transfer to Nuwara Eliya region and begin Pekoe Trail Stage 22 (Kandapola to Pedro Estate), a beautiful tea-country walk near “Little England” with rolling plantations and colonial-era estates. After the trek, enjoy city leisure around Gregory Lake and town center.

After breakfast, depart hill country and travel to Colombo via scenic mountain roads, waterfalls, and tea valleys. Stop at Ramboda Waterfall and tea viewpoints. Arrive in Colombo by evening and relax.

After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning in Colombo with light city sightseeing. Visit Viharamahadevi Park and Beira Lake surroundings, offering a calm green escape within the busy city and perfect for a short stroll after the trekking days. Thereafter, proceed to Gangaramaya Temple, one of Colombo’s most important and architecturally unique Buddhist temples, known for its impressive collection of religious artifacts, statues, and blend of modern and traditional Sri Lankan architecture. This visit provides a meaningful cultural ending to your Pekoe Trail journey. After the temple visit, transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward flight, concluding an unforgettable trekking and cultural experience through Sri Lanka’s legendary tea country and highlands.
